Cooling System Upgrade

Any pre '97 GM diesel with serpentine belt accessory drive will benefit from this upgrade. Whether you tow or not, you should consider this package. It is designed to minimize the instances of head cracking and localized "hot spots" in the engine. Coolant flow through the block and heads is increased by 74%, and flow through the radiator is also increased by 9%. This increase is due to a higher capacity water pump that delivers 130 gpm versus 87 gpm for the stock pump. A dual thermostat housing and outlet compliment the pump by allowing increased flow to the radiator. All necessary parts are provided in the kit, including Robertshaw high capacity "balanced flow" type thermostats (specify 180°, or 195°) The lower radiator hose is optional, but highly recommended as a maintenance item.

If you are planning a Phazer gear drive, it is advised to do both projects at the same time to reduce repetitive labor.

Note: Most vehicles will require a simple notch to be ground into the alternator support tower to allow water manifold clearance. The steel fuel return lines and heater tubes may also need alteration. Engines equipped with DB-2 mechanical fuel injection pump (93 and earlier) require the MFI kit and (typically 94 and later) with DS-4 electronic fuel injection pump require the EFI kit.
